OBERT SKYE

We are so grateful for the opportunity to meet and get to know Obert Skye, well, get to know him a little... He is definitely an elusive author! But, completely FUN, FUN, FUN!!! We couldn't believe how high energy he is. We were able to follow him around to a few elementary schools in the Davis School District, as well as, having him in our Fruit Heights & Bountiful stores.

The best part of being with him was watching him talk to the children he met. As soon as kids started entering the auditorium he would immediately walk into their midst to begin conversation. He wanted to know all about them... what they want to be when they grow up, what they like to do, and he seemed particularly interested in their names! He delivered a thought provoking message - Have Courage, Think Big & Be GREAT.

We discovered that he LOVES a good mystery. In fact, one of his favorite books to read are the Nero Wolfe mysteries and his hero is Archie Goodwin, sidekick to Nero, who does all the legwork to solve each mystery. He enjoys teaching and feels at-home in front of a packed room full of faithful readers. He hates bullies and deglamorizes them in his books.

One of his best qualities is that he is about one of the nicest guys we've ever met! So thankful for everything and every kind deed. It was a pleasure to have him in our store. He solidified our admiration and overwhelmingly strengthened his fan base here in Davis County!!!

THANKS for coming to visit, Obert ...

OBERT SKYE

The elusive Obert Skye was born a number of years ago in a town just about the size of the one you are living in. Obert read his first book at the age of 2. He wrote his first story at age 4. And, he was nearly trampled by a herd of water buffalo at age 6.

For a short time he lived on the Isle of Skye, just outside of Scotland, where he spent time as a candy-taster. Besides traveling and writing, Obert enjoys solving mysteries and collecting old maps. He also enjoys roller coasters and water polo.

Several years ago Obert Skye says he discovered the existence of Foo. Since then, Obert spends every chance he gets to help children discover and use their imaginations. As Obert Skye would say, "Impossible is not a word. You have the potential to do great things."

Mr. Skye's work has been compared to Harry Potter, however, the only similarity between Harry and Leven seems to be the fact that they were both forced to live with undesirable relatives. The world of Foo is a clever play on the human psyche whose inhabitants either represent different aspects of human nature or are born of the human imagination (aka dreams). It bears little to no resemblance of Potter's alternate London, or to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There are no wizards, dragons, or mythical beasts. Instead, there are beasts born of the human imagination bearing more of a resemblance to Piers Anthony's "Xanth" than to anything that exists in Harry Potter's world, and the inhabitants of Foo are regular people, like you and me, who were in the right place at the right time and got pulled into Foo completely by surprise. Once they enter Foo, it becomes their job to manipulate the dreams of mankind, making them more digestible to the human mind; or, sometimes, making them more attainable.

BOOK SIGNING: Join us Monday, January 25th at the Fruit Heights store from 4:00-5:30 to meet Obert Skye in person!!! Then on Tuesday, January 26th, Mr. Skye will be at the Bountiful store from 6:00-7:30. He will be available to sign books and discuss the wonderful world of imagination. Don't miss this EXCITING EVENT!!! Click HERE to get your favorite copies.

RUMORS OF PEACE

The third and final book in our series, "three books for the smartest teens you know" is Rumors of Peace, 400 pages, by Ella Leffland.
This book treats a teen's intelligence with the respect it deserves, instead of viewing it as a type of social plague. The main character comes of age among peers who are each discovering what being smart means. Leffland's novel follows one girl's passage from childhood to youth during the years between Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima. As Suse Hansen grows up and the world goes to war, she seeks out the news in libraries and on the radio, simply because it feels wrong not to know. Rumors of Peace is a rare find that covers the emotional and intellectual nuances that go into growing up.

What no one who markets or sells them likes to dwell on is that young adult novels are a steppingstone, not a stopping place. Smart, curious teens turn to books to discover the adults they will become, not to see the kids they already are.

If we don't have these three books on our shelf, please ask us to order more copies. We can have them here in about a week. And remember, if you don't see other books you're looking for in our stores, we would be more than happy to order them too. Happy reading!

GILGAMESH: A NOVEL

The second book of "three books for the smartest teens you know" is Gilgamesh, by Joan London, 272 pages.

The teenage heroine in Gilgamesh also travels far from home. Edith Clark grows up on an isolated farm in Australia, and when her cousin and his friend pay a visit, her life is changed forever. She spends one night with the friend, a young man from Armenia, and becomes a mother nine months later. Although this could be a tired plot, in Gilgamesh it becomes a new and powerful story as Edith and her son travel to London, and then to Armenia, in search of the boy's father. World War II intervenes, and she's forced to wait out the fighting abroad. By the novel's end, Edith's son is embarking on his own trip, but Joan London's writing — poetic, haunting and mesmerizing — will stay by your side for years to come.

THREE BOOKS FOR THE SMARTEST TEENS YOU KNOW

The publishing world likes to say that young adult literature is in a golden age, full of great writing, and most important, growing sales in an otherwise dismal market.

But the genre is not without flaws according to Garret Freymann-Weyr, "Many young adult novels don't set the bar very high in their language, character complexity or emotional nuance, which is why I — a young adult author — like to encourage young readers to venture into the adult shelf."

This week we'll introduce three non-young adult novels featuring young protagonists that anyone — young or old — will read with both joy and fervor. The first book we'll highlight is The Law of Dreams, by Peter Behrens, 416 pages.

In Peter Behrens' The Law of Dreams, a young Irish boy takes to the road after his family starves in the potato famine and his home is burned by a British landlord. As he travels through his ruined country, Fergus O'Brien meets his share of thieves, prostitutes and soul mates. Forced to endure enough physical trials and heartaches to suit even the most thrill-addicted teenager, Fergus finds his way to a ship sailing for Canada. Since this isn't a young adult novel, there's no sappy ending that eases our hero's hardship, only clean, elegant sentences and page after page of heart-stopping adventure.

Watch for the next two books later this week!
